Comment to Michael Perrin: when will the earth turn around and start to move into the next ice age? Increasing cortentnacions of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and shrinking ice caps are acting to make an ice age less and less likely. One ensures the atmosphere retains more heat and the other ensures that there is a greater surface area to absorb the energy of the suns rays rather than reflect them back into space (i.e. a growing expanse of ocean that was once covered by ice is being exposed to the suns rays and is absorbing a significantly larger portion of the energy in the suns rays than the ice).To talk about about global warming resulting from the passing of an ice age is akin to the tail wagging the dog. Global warming is what brought the planet out of the last ice age and human activities are exagerating this warming. If we were to remove the influence of human activity on global warming would the planet still be warming or would it be cooling..? Not an irrelevant question but this is not the reality with which we are faced. Knowing that our activities are accelerating the pace of global warming in a significant manner must be addressed along with the other polutants we are pumping into our environment. I say this as a relatively young man who will have to live with the consequences of your actions or perhaps inaction. While my concern stems in part from self interest it also born of a very real concern for our children and the problems with which they will be burdened if we fail to act. How will the world wars and depressions of the past century compare to food bowls become dust bowls, failing ecosystems, rising sea levels and displaced populations fighting for water, food and the right to live?
